Finance still pays — but the map has shifted

Traditional investment banking is smaller than it was a decade ago, but corporate finance, fintech operations, FP&A, controllership, and quant roles are all hiring aggressively. The best-paid finance career of 2026 for most people is not IB — it's senior FP&A at a fast-growing tech company.

Step 2 of 11

Track map

Investment Banking → Private Equity / Hedge Fund path. Corporate Finance: FP&A → Finance Director → CFO. Controllership: Accountant → Controller → CAO. Fintech operations: BizOps → Strategy → Head of Finance. Quant: research → PM. Pick one and don't lateral for at least 3 years — pay compounds within a track.

03
Step 3 of 11

Compensation reality

IB analyst in NYC/London: $175k–$220k all-in year one. Senior FP&A at a $500M ARR SaaS: $180k–$260k base + equity. Corporate controller: $150k–$220k. CFO of a Series C: $250k–$400k base + 0.75%–1.5% equity. Dubai and Singapore roles pay 15–25% less base but tax-adjusted often win.

04
Step 4 of 11

Certifications that actually matter

CFA (buy-side, research, quant), CPA/ACA (audit, controllership, CFO), FRM (risk), and increasingly a specialized fintech or data credential. MBAs still matter for consulting and IB associate lateral, less elsewhere. Skip 'general' finance certificates.

05
Step 5 of 11

The tool stack recruiters filter on

Advanced Excel (models — not formulas), one BI tool (Looker, Tableau, or Power BI), SQL (real, not superficial), one ERP (NetSuite, SAP, or Oracle), and Python for anyone in quant, risk, or strategic finance. Add one AI-augmented workflow — automated reconciliation, forecasting copilot, or Bloomberg's AI tools.

06
Step 6 of 11

Hiring hotspots

Investment banking: New York, London, Hong Kong. Fintech: London, Singapore, Dubai, Berlin. Corporate finance: everywhere — but especially US tech hubs, Amsterdam, and Zurich. Family offices and PE middle-office: London, Zurich, Dubai. Crypto/Web3 finance is mostly remote or nomadic.

07
Step 7 of 11

Interview loop

IB: fit + technicals + case + super-day. Corporate: recruiter, hiring manager, modeling exercise (2–4 hours), cross-functional panel, offer. Modeling exercises are the gate — practice building a 3-statement model from scratch under time pressure until it's automatic.

08
Step 8 of 11

Visa options

Singapore EP for senior finance roles. UK Skilled Worker for regulated roles at licensed firms. UAE Golden Visa for CFOs and above. Switzerland is possible but slower — go through a Big 4 or a large bank. Ireland is a good back-door into the EU for regulated finance.

09
Step 9 of 11

Common mistakes

Applying for IB without deal experience, applying for CFO roles without ever having owned a full close, or listing certifications without the practical work behind them. Finance interviewers verify skills faster than any other function.

10
Step 10 of 11

Career longevity

Finance is one of the few tracks where compensation still climbs in your 50s. Investing in a specialty (SaaS finance, revenue accounting, treasury) and staying in it beats chasing titles.
