Working in the United Kingdom: Skilled Worker Visa, Global Talent, and the Real Job Market

Despite tightened rules, the UK's Skilled Worker route and Global Talent visa remain among the world's most navigable. If your role is on the sponsor list and clears the salary threshold, you can be in London within 3 months.

You need a job offer from a licensed sponsor, a Certificate of Sponsorship, and to meet the salary threshold — £38,700 general or the going-rate for your occupation, whichever is higher. Some occupations on the Immigration Salary List have lower thresholds.

For senior tech, science, arts, and academia, Global Talent lets you work for anyone, switch jobs freely, and includes a 3–5 year settlement path. Tech Nation endorsement (or successor bodies), Royal Society, or peer-reviewed publications open this door.

Before applying to any UK job from abroad, verify the employer is on the Register of Licensed Sponsors (a public list). Roughly one third of UK employers are licensed. Don't waste applications on unlicensed ones.

London Sr Engineer: £95k–£140k. London Sr PM: £110k–£165k. Manchester/Edinburgh: 20–30% less. Financial services in London runs 15–25% higher. Hospitality and retail have their own bands and thresholds.

Fintech (Revolut, Wise, Monzo, Stripe, Adyen), enterprise SaaS, AI/ML (DeepMind and adjacent), healthcare tech, and consulting. Manchester and Edinburgh have grown into serious secondary hubs.

Recruiter, hiring manager, technical/case, panel with peers, values/final. UK loops tend to be shorter than US — 3–5 rounds is normal.

London 1-bed: £1,800–£2,800/mo in Zone 2. Council tax adds £150–£250/mo. Groceries roughly on par with US medium-cost cities. Transport is expensive but excellent.

Income tax + National Insurance can hit ~45% marginal. Employer pensions are typically strong. Non-dom rules changed in April 2025 — talk to a tax advisor if this is relevant to you.

Skilled Worker allows dependents (partner + children under 18) to join. Partner can work. Children can access NHS and public schools.

Applying to unlicensed sponsors. Not checking the going-rate table. Underestimating London cost of living. Not budgeting the IHS (Immigration Health Surcharge) — £1,035/year per person.
