PM is harder to hire into globally — and worth it
Unlike engineering, PM has fewer clean visa fast-tracks. But senior PM comp in the US now regularly clears $300k total, and top PMs move companies and continents multiple times in a career.
Ladder
APM → PM → Sr PM → Group PM / Lead PM → Director → VP → CPO. Specializations: Growth PM, Platform PM, Data PM, AI PM, Payments PM. AI PM is the fastest-growing niche in 2026.
Comp bands
US Sr PM (public tech): $220k–$310k total. Staff / GPM: $310k–$450k. Director: $400k–$600k. VP: $500k–$900k+. London Sr PM: £110k–£165k. Berlin Sr PM: €95k–€135k. Singapore Sr PM: S$150k–S$210k. Dubai Sr PM: AED 40k–65k/mo.
What separates senior from staff
Staff PMs shape strategy, not just ship features. Show one example where you influenced roadmap direction, killed a project, or built a new market segment. Recruiters filter hard for this signal.
Portfolio and PM 'work samples'
One case study of a product decision — the context, the options, the tradeoffs, the decision, the outcome, and what you'd do differently. Ideally with metrics. Publish it on LinkedIn or a personal site.
Interview loop
Recruiter, hiring manager, product-sense case, execution case, analytics case, cross-functional (design + eng), leadership final. Craft one 'product you'd improve' answer for every kind of company you interview at.
Sponsorship reality for PMs
UK Skilled Worker, Netherlands HSM, Canada GTS, Singapore EP, and UAE employer visa all sponsor PMs regularly. Germany's EU Blue Card works if your salary clears the threshold. Big Tech transfers via L1 are still one of the smoothest global moves.
Skills that unlock the next level
Deep analytics fluency (SQL + Amplitude/Mixpanel), one core AI/LLM use-case built end-to-end, and executive-level written communication. The last one is quietly the biggest promotion lever above Sr PM.
Common mistakes
Framing your work as 'shipped X' instead of 'shipped X, which drove Y outcome for Z reason'. Applying to companies you don't use. Skipping the analytics loop prep. Being vague about role attribution on team wins.
Career longevity
PM optionality is enormous — founding, VC, consulting, execs. Pick a domain early (fintech, health, dev tools) and become the person known for that domain.
