Sales is the most under-appreciated global career
Great sellers are hired everywhere, sponsored aggressively, and often out-earn engineers by year three. If you can consistently close $1M+ of ARR, you'll never be unemployed.
The role ladder
SDR/BDR → Account Executive (SMB → Mid-Market → Enterprise) → Sr AE / Strategic AE → Manager → Director → VP → CRO. Parallel tracks: Sales Engineering, Customer Success, Renewals, Channel/Partnerships, Sales Operations.
OTE by market and segment
SDR: $60k–$85k US, £35k–£50k UK. SMB AE: $120k–$180k OTE US. Mid-Market AE: $180k–$260k OTE US, £110k–£160k UK. Enterprise AE: $250k–$400k OTE US, £160k–£240k UK. Strategic / Named Accounts: $400k–$700k OTE. Dubai and Singapore enterprise AE: often $200k–$350k tax-advantaged.
What recruiters actually filter on
Attainment percentage last 3 years (must be honest — they check), average deal size, sales cycle length, quota size, retention, and — critically — whether you sold into the same buyer they're hiring you to sell into. A CFO-sold rep is a different hire than a CTO-sold rep.
Skills separating top sellers
Proper discovery (MEDDPICC, Command of the Message, or equivalent framework), multi-thread account management, executive presence in a first meeting, and — increasingly — comfort using AI for research, prep, and follow-up. The AI-native seller is 20–30% more productive than the manual one.
Companies hiring globally
US enterprise SaaS (Salesforce, ServiceNow, Snowflake, Databricks), UK/EU fintech (Adyen, Stripe, Revolut for business), Middle East hyperscalers, and increasingly Asia-Pacific SaaS through Singapore. Founder-led startups are the highest-variance and highest-upside path.
Interview loop
Recruiter, hiring manager, mock discovery call, mock pitch or demo, panel with peers and cross-functional, executive final. The mock calls are decisive — prep a real one with a peer at least three times before your first interview.
Visa options
Sales visas are harder than engineering but real: UK Skilled Worker for AEs above the salary threshold, UAE employer visa (very fast for enterprise sellers), Singapore EP for named accounts, and Ireland for anyone selling into EMEA out of a Dublin HQ.
Common mistakes
Over-inflating attainment (recruiters check), applying to segments you haven't sold, and not building a personal LinkedIn brand — top sellers get inbound recruiter interest weekly, not because they're famous but because they post one relevant thing per week.
Long-term optionality
Great sellers can become VPs, or shift to founding sales, or move to venture, or run their own consulting. The skill compounds. Compensation typically peaks in your 40s in a leadership role — plan for it.
