Singapore filters harder now — but rewards specialists
The COMPASS points system introduced in 2023 and refined since has made the Employment Pass more selective. If you score well, you're in. If you don't, no amount of persistence gets you there.
Employment Pass basics
Fixed monthly salary threshold (2026): S$5,600 general, S$6,200 in financial services, higher for older/more experienced candidates. Plus COMPASS pass mark. Standard duration 2 years, renewable up to 3.
COMPASS points breakdown
Salary vs sector benchmarks, qualifications (top-tier university bonus), diversity (are your nationality's numbers already high at the firm), local support (percentage of local hires at the firm), plus shortage-occupation bonuses. You need 40+ points to pass; 20 in the base categories are non-negotiable.
Salary bands
Sr Software Engineer: S$140k–S$190k. Sr PM: S$150k–S$210k. Sr Data Scientist: S$150k–S$200k. Sr Finance (banking): S$160k–S$260k. Head of X roles: S$220k–S$400k+.
Where hiring is strongest
Fintech (DBS, Grab, Sea, Wise, Stripe), enterprise SaaS APAC HQs, biotech in Biopolis, semiconductor at Tuas/Woodlands, family offices, and — increasingly — AI/ML roles at Sea/Grab/BytePlus.
Interview loop
Standard 4–6 round loop. Case exercises are common. Reference checks are thorough. Many APAC HQ roles need coverage of ANZ + SEA + India, so demonstrate regional experience or capacity.
Cost of living
1-bed condo central: S$3,500–S$6,000/mo. Suburbs: S$2,500–S$4,000. Groceries mid-to-high. Healthcare good. Cars are astronomical (COE), so most expats don't own. Public transit is world-class.
Family and PR path
Dependent Pass for spouse + kids. Local schools competitive; international schools S$30k–S$50k/year. PR path exists but selective; typically 3+ years of EP work plus strong integration signals.
Common mistakes
Applying to companies with poor COMPASS diversity scores for your nationality. Underestimating cost of living. Not asking about mobility (many APAC HQ roles require heavy regional travel).
